Xuanwu Lake Park

In ancient times the Xuanwu Lake was known as Sangpo Lake. Because it lies north of the capital city of the Six Dynasties, it was also called Rear Lake or North Lake.

Towards the end of the Qing Dynasty the lake was opened as a public park. Surrounded by hills and studded with sites of cultural interest, the lake is rimmed by a shore overgrown with trees, and shimmers and sparkles like a vast expanse of liquid silver. It is the largest park in Nanjing.
