| It
is on Xinsha Island in the Fuchun River, 30 kilometers from urban Hangzhou.
The island is 4.1 2 square kilometers in area and has a population of
less than 1,000. It offers a strong local color, with birds twittering
in mulberry trees, the fragrance of flowers drifting in the air, golden
sand spreading on the beach, and houses of grey tiles and white-washed
walls enclosed with bamboo fences. Visitors to the island will have
a chance to experience the traditional way of life in areas south of
the Changjiang River. They could take a
bamboo raft to drift on the Fuchun River, ride an ox cart around the
island, join the local residents in making paper by hand, pedaling a
waterwheel, working in the fields with traditional farm tools, picking
mulberry tree leaves, raising silkworms, spinning cloth, and weaving
straw sandals, watching goats locked in fighting and song and dance
performances as well as attending other tourist programs with an Oriental
cultural flavor. |
