Located in the city proper of Hangzhou, the scenic area stretches for 60 square kilometers, of which 5.6 square kilometers are waters. West Lake is connected with urban Hangzhou in the east and is encircled by hills on the remaining three sides. The lake and the hills add radiance and beauty to each other. The scenic area, known as a "paradise on earth," has West Lake at the center and consists of the Lakeside District, the Mid-Lake District, the Northern Mountain District, the Southern Mountain District, and the Qiantang River District.
