The tomb of Guan Yu lies 2.5 km to the west of Changbanpo, Dangyang City. It is 8 m high and 60 m in perimeter. The balustrades are made of black stone. The burial ground is planted with pine tress and cypresses with dense shades. Historical documents record that Guan Yu and his troops guarded Jingzhou in 219 but had to retreat to Maicheng after defeat. He was murdered by Lu Meng, a general under Sun Quan. Guan's head was presented to Cao Cao by Sun Quan but his remains were buried with solemn ceremony in Dangyang. Nearby is the Temple of Guan Yu, covering 10,000 sq. m. It looks magnificent with towers and pavilions surrounding. |
