Located in southern Ningxia, Guyuan County is one of the transportation hubs in the autonomous region, with the Ping-Yin, Xi-Lan, and Lan-r highways, and the Bao-Zhong Railway running through.

There are many places of interest in Guyuan County, including Mt. Xumi Grottoes, one of the ten oldest grottoes in China, ruins of the Qin ancient Great Wall, and Mt. Liupan. A tourist area has taken shape, ranging from Guyuan and Jingyuan to Xi'an, Lanzhou, and Yinchuan.
