Established by wel-known Chinese writer Zhang Xianliang, the film city is famous for films depicting the landscape and culture of western China, such as the Red Sorghum, and international prize winner. It is located in the Zhenbei Castle 30 kms west of Yinchuan. The castle was a military station in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Since the 1920s, it has served as a film studio, where more than ten films were produced.
