Also
known as the City of the Phoenix, Yinchuan is the capital of the Ningxia
Hui Autonomous Region. It is located in the heart of the Ningxia Plain,
with Mt. Helan in the west and the Huanghe River in the east. Yinchuan
has a population of 910,000 and an area of 4,399 square kilometers and
is 1,110 meters above sea level. It has been listed by the Chinese government
as one of China's 100 Ancient Cultural Cities. Yinchuan has many places
of interest reflecting the culture of the Huanghe River region. It served
as the capital of the state of Western Xia (1038-1228), and the royal
mausoleum of the Western Xia State is historical evidence of the combination
of the Chinese culture and the culture of the Western Region.
Yinchuan
has convenient transportation. Air and rail lines from Yinchuan reach
major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Van,
Lanzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan and Urumqi. Telecommunications is under program
control in downtown area. There are six star-rated hotels and 30 hotels
that receive foreigners with a bedding capacity of 3,000.
