Wuxi / Famous Shops and Stores

Introduction

The city has a history of some 3,000 years. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Wuxi was famous as a rice market and a cloth dock in China, with a developed economy. Since the 20th century, Wuxi has become much famous for its industry and trade and come to be known as Lesser Shanghai.Wuxi is rich in tourist commodities including clay figurines, dark red earthen tea sets from Yixing, freshwater pearl objects, silk embroidery and porcelain cooking utensils.

Famous Bazaars

Wuxi First General Merchandise (Group) Co. Ltd.

The earliest retail enterprise in the city, it stands on the northern bank of Zhongshan Road. Now the group is composed of four trade mansions, seven wholly owned retail service enterprises and seven shareholding enterprises.

The group has gradually demonstrated its unique features in retails of household electrical appliances, audio/video facilities, garments and shoes and hats. Its retails and social results have increased steadily.

Wuxi Trade Mansion Group Co. Ltd.

It is the largest retail enterprise in the city. Having a business area of 40,000 square meters, it sells 100,000 kinds of commodities. This group has two business buildings, one in the downtown area and the other on Tongyun Road by the Wuxi Railway Station. It has led the city in the volume of sales for 10 consecutive years.

Wuxi Yaohan Co.

Located in the busy area of the city, it has a business floor of 45,000 square meters, a good shopping environment and is equipped with modern facilities. It mainly handles real estate development and leasing, catering, amusement, retails of general merchandise, knitwear, textiles, garments, shoes, hats, crafts, medicines, furniture, audio and video facilities, computers and parts, auto parts, cigarettes and wines, candies, cakes and others.

Shopping Streets

In the downtown area, Zhongshan Road is a busiest commercial street of Wuxi. Along it, there are many shopping centers, exclusive sales shops, restaurants and a number of boutiques.
