Erected during the reign of Emperor Gaodi (480-482) of the Southern Dynasty, the pagoda is a wooden-and-brick structure. On top of the pagoda there is a bronze gourd weighing 3,000 grams.

Since the construction of Wenbi, Changzhou has given birth to 15 emperors, nine Number One Scholars, 1,333 metropolitan graduates, and a great number of statesmen, economists, historians, men of letters, calligraphers and painters, and scientists.
