Sprawling along the Songhua River, Jilin
City is the second largest city in Jilin Province, with an area of 27,000
square kilometers and a population of 4.276 million.
Jilin
is referred to as a river city because of Boat Sailing on the Songhua
River, a verse composed by Emperor Kang Xi of the Qing Dynasty during
his inspection tour of the east. It is surrounded on all sides by the
offset of the Changbai Mountains, and the Songhua River that flows in
a S-shaped course through the urban area looks like a blue ribbon.
Jilin City has the Fengman Hydropower Station and a large chemical
industrial town. It has a solid industrial foundation with complete
industrial sectors. Tourism is an industry under well development there.
Songhua Lake
A major national area of historic interest and scenic beauty, Songhua
Lake is located on the upper reaches of the Second Songhua River, 24
kilomters southeast of Jilin City. It is a large manmade lake formed
with the construction of the Fengman Hydropower Station in 1937.
The
lake is 550 square kilometers in area, 75 meters deep, more than 10
kilometers wide at the widest point, and 200 kilometers in circumference.
The picturesque lake is enchanted by Wuhu (Five-Tiger) Islets; Meirensong
Mountain with exotic peaks; Jingui Islet, Luotuo Peak, Jiangjun Gully,
Wolong Pool, and Luoquan Gully scenic areas; and eight scenic spots
including Santaiyingri (Sun Reflected at Three Terraces) Aohua Terrace,
Shilong Screen, and Mifeng Rock.
Rime in Jilin
Rime in the city of Jilin is cited as one of the four natural wonders
in China, the other three being the landsacpe of Guilin, the Stone Forest
in Yunnan Province, and the Three Gorges on the Changjiang (Yangtze)
River. People admire the beauty of the magnificentrimeatdifferecnt hours:
to watch heavy fog at night, rime early in the morning, and melting-off
rime at noon.
Meteorite
Shower in Jilin
At the 36th second, the second minite, 15 o'clock on March 8, 1976,
stone meteorites were falling down in an area of 500 square kilometers
in the northwestern suburbs of Jilin and Yongji County. A total of 138
stones weighting 2,616 kilograms were collected. The largest weighs
1,770 kilograms. It is the largest in the world, and Chinese and foreign
tourists called it a "wonder in the mainland of China."
The Lafa Mountain National Forest Park in Jiaohe
Located in Jiaohe City, the park is where the Changtu and Labin railroads,
the Wutu Highway, and National Highway 302 meet. It has an area of 28,000
hectares, of which 2,461 hectares are water. Its forest cover is 39
percent. The park is divided into four scenic areas - Lafa Mountain,
Liangdao Islet, Jindou Palace, and Qingling Ridge. |
